The lagoon’s icon. The Venetian motoscafo is arguably the most recognisable boat in the world: the private taxi of the Venetian lagoon, used for decades to shuttle travellers between Marco Polo airport, the Grand Canal hotels and the surrounding islands. Varnished wood, covered cabin with careful finishes, low pure lines – it typically carries 6 to 10 passengers and forms part of Venice’s visual and acoustic heritage.
Original architecture. Traditional wooden hull, inboard diesel motor chosen for intensive-use reliability, moderate speed adapted to lagoon restrictions. Its main issue: the noise and pollution it generates in a fragile lagoon whose authorities are actively seeking to reduce the impact of motorisation.
The Lanéva conversion. The motoscafo is a textbook case for professional retrofit. Highly predictable usage profile (known routes, short rotations, daily return to dock), moderate distances, and strong regulatory incentives for zero-emission transition. Electric motor of 60 to 100 kW, battery pack of 50 to 80 kWh sized for a full day of service, overnight recharging. We launched, in 2022, Venice’s first 100% electric premium aquatic service with our partner Blitz Exclusive.
